Canada Has a Guilty Plea Wrongful Conviction Problem

The Canadian Registry of Wrongful Convictions www.wrongfulconviction.ca .like similar registries in the United States and Kingdom, was designed to facilitate research on patterns trends wrongful convictions. As its launch February 2023, 15 83 remedied convictions or 17% were result guilty pleas by accused. This is a percentage as found UK registry lower than 27% plea US registry. Forty percent entered women. Most these involved flawed expert testimony Charles Smith about cause baby deaths majority all for imagined crimes that did not happen. Almost half (7 15) Canada’s false taken from racialized people including three Indigenous men, one Black man, another man Brown who had recently immigrated India. Two fifteen accused persons diagnosed mental health cognitive challenges. With exclusion mandatory sentence life imprisonment ineligibility parole 10 years, average remaining 14 cases months with evidence “lop-sided” especially involving 2 received sentences time already served.
